Satellite Coolers for Rotary Kilns

Satellite coolers still play a critical role in many kiln processes.

Satellite (Planetary) Coolers

Satellite coolers still play a critical role in many kiln processes. Satellite coolers are manufactured with various specifications of metal in the form a tube with internal fins. They are attached to the outside of the kiln with specialized mounting systems and material chutes. The general design basis for the cooler is that:

  • 75% of the heat transfer is a result of focused convective heat transfer between: 1. The air drawn into the kiln through the cooler and interior surfaces, 2. Conductive heat transfer between interior surfaces and the product internals.
  • 25% of the heat transfer is a result of radiation and natural convection from exterior surfaces.

Common Satellite Cooler Problems:

  • Deterioration and breakage of the internals
  • Material flow through the coolers
  • Stress cracks on cooler shell
  • Stress cracks and failure of chutes and mounting systems

How we approach Satellite Coolers

  • We recommend a Process Evaluation (Heat and Mass Balance, Thermal Study) prior designing any satellite cooler. Our trusted partner, Optimus Process Solutions (click here) has the experience necessary to provide a detailed evaluation of your process.
  • Evaluate current design and make suggestions/modifications to improve current process or cooler design specification.
  • Complete and agree in detail upon general arrangement drawings

What we need to know:

  • Make, model, year of current cooler system & rotary unit
  • Drawings/geometry
  • Product
  • Process
  • Product temperature
  • Product Rate
  • Feed Rate
  • Kiln Slope
  • Bulk Density (if available)
  • Absolute Density (if available)
